My Office: One Room Challenge Week #4

Welcome back to my One Room Challenge where I am attempting to decorate my home office in six weeks!  This is week #4.  Here’s where you can catch up on Week #1, Week #2, and Week #3.  You should also check out the talented Wednesday participants here and the other Thursday linking participants here.

This week I’ve been working on a storage solution for wrapping paper.  I was inspired by this image but wanted to put my own spin on it:

Enter this stuff:

I spotted these wavy wood strips at Home Depot months ago and have been thinking about where I could use them ever since.  I don’t know what they’re supposed to be used for, but this was the tag for them in case you’d like some cool wavy wood strips too:

I would love to install them horizontally and staggered (as shown above) as a wainscoting in a beach house and paint them a pale aqua.  But last time I checked, I don’t have a beach house, so I decided to use them to frame my wrapping paper holder.  I painted them off-white, added some dowels that I painted gold and some brass teacup hooks, and this is how it turned out:

The other project I tackled this week was a new lampshade for my faux bamboo floor lamp.  I started with this shade from World Market:

When I was working with my good friend, Wanda Colon, on Home Made Simple, we decorated a drum shade like this with ribbon, and I wanted to do something similar.

I love this pillow that Frontgate is currently selling so I decided to decorate my lampshade with ribbon in a caning pattern like this pillow.

I love how it turned out!  I exhausted all sources for Offray 3/8″ pink ribbon within a 20 mile radius of my home, but it was well worth it.

Lampshade After

Lampshade After

I’m going to try and post the how-to for the lampshade before next Thursday, but I have a crazy week that includes my 25th(!!!) high school reunion, a hometown visit to see an old friend who’s now a giant star, and possibly a new job.

I have so many things to accomplish for next week, but I think I’m going to focus on the Bathroom part of my Office.

Bathroom Before

Bathroom Before

Since this room is designed to be a bedroom and it shares a toilet/bath/shower room with another bedroom, the builder created these sink nooks that are open to each bedroom.  I want to do a different wall finish in this space.  One thought is to do a mural like this:

Or this:

Other ideas are wallpaper or adding a trellis like this:

In addition to the wall finish, I want to add hardware to the vanity and change out the vanity light.

Happy (belated) Earth Day.  I’m writing this on Earth Day but you won’t read it until the next day.  Please consider recycling, re-purposing, and reusing your furniture, accessories, and decorations!

Love the lamp shade! You did a great job!!! Like the look of the trellis work for the bathroom: are you considering actual trellis or a paint/paper application? If real is the direction you’re going, I’m wondering about cleaning all those nooks & crannies. Otherwise, I think it’s amazing!

  6. Rachel – that lampshade is amazing! The most creative I’ve gotten with a lampshade is just one ribbon around the bottom, but now I want to do more. 🙂
