Rachel Bauer Design Week #2: Shopping for the Missing Pieces

orc

It’s week two of the six week One Room Challenge, and this time around I’m turning my Guest Room into a chic hotel suite with an Italian flair.   My parents always stay in this room when they visit, and they love Italy, so I want to give it some Italian glam for them.

When we moved to this house, I replaced the builder ceiling light with the Murano chandelier in the “before” picture above. I also hung some relaxed Roman shades that I’ve had for years on the windows.  The rest of the furniture and decor is a mishmash of stuff that really doesn’t belong together.  We have a TV on the floor wrapped in a moving blanket, a green polka dotted ottoman, and other weirdness.  My plan is to paint the walls a blush color, add a canopy over the bed, add a bedskirt, hang art, install panels over the Roman shades, make a coffee station for my Mom, and paint and decorate the adjacent Jack & Jill bath.  This week I spent most of my time shopping for the outstanding items that I needed to implement my plans.  My first purchase was for the bedskirt.  I’ve made a couple of bedskirts before out of saris.  They’re about the perfect amount of yardage for a bedskirt and they generally have a border on the edges which looks nice on the bottom of the bedskirt.  Here’s a sari bedskirt I made for an earlier ORC:

So I did a search on eBay for vintage saris and decided on this one:

Then I needed fabric for the canopy I’d like to add behind the bed and I wanted a solid blush colored fabric.  I went to my go to spot for inexpensive, but high end fabric, the Kravet outlet.  I purchased this fabric:

It should here this week and when it does, I’ll pick a blush paint color to match it.

Then I bought some items I need for my coffee station.  I’m using this existing ikea storage unit for the station, but I’m going to skirt it with a Brunswick & Fils fabric that I have left over from a past project.

I bought a small, single serve coffee maker that takes K-cups, some cute coffee mugs, and a mug stand, and I’m using this existing hand-painted tray with a Venice scene.

I also bought two pair of curtain panels from Homegoods.  This pair will be the panels on the windows over the Roman shades:

This second pair will be my shower curtain:

Have a good week!
